Centering Racial Equity
In addition to working together in new ways to create systemic change, partners must be able to develop, execute and assess the impact of strategies through a racial equity lens. This lens enables communities to move beyond Band-Aid fixes and to attack inequality at its roots. Centering racial equity means understanding the impact of historical factors on current systems and outcomes, identifying potentially disparate impacts on different racial groups, interrogating personal biases, working to become more race-informed in operations and practices and measuring whether change is happening, both in and outside organizations. Lasting change requires that our eyes be wide open to the ways that our efforts directly combat — or else tacitly allow — widening racial disparities.
